SECOND HOME, SECOND CHANCE
WHO WE ARE
While our name may not boast glamour or excitement, it carries deep significance for us.

At Second Presbyterian Church, we find not just a place of worship.
We find a second home.
The world can at times be divisive, dark, and judgmental. We believe that together we are called to embrace a distinct way of life within this world—rooted in grace and fueled by love. As a community, we are strengthened by the questions, hopes, and experiences that each person brings. We value how the gifts of each member shape who we are.
Through moving worship and music, relevant preaching, and thoughtful reflection, we strive to engage both hearts and minds. We encourage critical thinking and meaningful discussion.
We also find meaning beyond our sanctuary. We flourish through service to others, hands-on community outreach, and intergenerational engagement, providing unique opportunities for relationship and growth.

As Second Presbyterian Church, we get not just deeper meaning and connection.
We get a second chance.
Our aim is to break down barriers and offer gentle support, to foster an environment where curiosity thrives and compassion takes the place of judgment. Here, vulnerability is
celebrated and love is unconditional.
Our name may not boast glamour or excitement, but you may find that it carries deep significance for you, too.
Welcome
to Second Presbyterian Church.
Rooted in Grace, United in Faith
What we believe
Our beliefs are shaped by scripture, community, and the love of God. We embrace our identity as a Presbyterian church, recognizing the need for grace, second chances, and the joy that comes from walking together in faith. Our calling is to serve others and celebrate the diversity and gifts within our community.
As "Second"
we know that—just like churches—each of us sometimes needs a second start and a second chance Luke 15:11-32; John 8:1-11.
As "Presbyterian"
we know that “all have fallen short of the glory of God,” but never short of God’s loving care Romans 3:23-24.
As a "Church"
we know that we are stronger when we recognize both that our gifts come from the grace of God and that they make sense in service to others 1 Cor 12:4-7.
Second Presbyterian Church has been strongly shaped by the Reformed tradition of Christianity. Our congregation is historically affiliated with the Presbyterian Church United States of American (PCUSA) denomination and with the Presbytery of Eastern Virginia (PEVA). Our hymnal—"Lift Up Your Hearts"—was jointly published by the Reformed Church in America and the Christian Reformed Church.
